The Quiet Adventures of Banja Luka Come to whl.travel

The Quiet Adventures of Banja Luka Come to whl.travel

Tucked away in a quiet northwest corner of Bosnia-Herzegovina lies one of the last untouched natural ecosystems in Europe. While that sounds like something many tour companies say these days about their own homes, you would be hard pressed to find more unspoiled countryside than that around Banja Luka, where lack of easy access and limited infrastructure once halted the usual tourist swell to this region. Nowadays, though, under the careful guidance of Zepter Passport, the new whl.travel local connection in this part of the world, Banja Luka is now opening up a little.

Fortunately deeply dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Zepter Passport has taken careful steps to make sure that human impact is minimal in Banja Luka. In some ways, this has been helped by the company's relative youth, which means that it doesn't have many bad habits to work against. It can really help steer Banja Luka on a greener path toward the future.

Travellers to Banja Luka therefore suffer only an embarrassment of riches, deciding between the incredible variety of exciting things to see and do. While Banja Luka city has its share of clubs and bars, old fortresses, presidential palaces, funky cafes, oh-so-hip student eateries and stunning locals (it's reputed to be home of some of the world's most beautiful women), visiting the outlying region is perfect for what some might call 'quiet adventure.'

The area surrounding Banja Luka includes lush forests in which there is a smattering of tiny villages and more wildlife than people. Feeding all this verdure, though, is a complex river system that is teeming with fish and other aquatic creatures, and arguably the main draw of this tiny pocket of the world.

]]>

+ The Pliva River, known for its spectacular multicoloured waters and large grayling fish, attracts fly-fishers from all over the globe.

+ The Una River was given its name, meaning the 'only one,' by Roman explorers. This intricate system of waterfalls, rapids and calm waters shelters unique species of fish and plants.

+ The Unac River brims with rainbow and brown trout. This mountain river is famous for its twilight activity, when the majority of its fish and flowers spring to life.

+ The Ribnik is the wildest river in the Banja Luka region and home to the largest grayling in Bosnia-Herzegovina. Snag one of these cunning fish and claim the ultimate trophy.

+ The Sanica is a tiny tributary of the larger Sana River, but it makes up for its size with the sheer weight of its fish population: 70 percent of the region's grayling population can be found here, while the rest is brown trout.

+ The Krusnica River's waters are diamond clear, sourced from a nearby mountain spring that is absolutely pure (don't be timid about drinking from these waters). Near Banja Luka, the spring reaches a depth of nearly 120 meters, allowing for a wider variance of wildlife and larger fish.

+ The Neretva River has one of the richest instances of soil erosion in the Balkans due to seven nearby mountain peaks and a vast tangle of tributaries. It is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful fly-fishing spots in the world and is said to have the most copious flow of any waterway draining into the Adriatic Sea. A wide variety of fish flourish in the Neretva, from brown and marble trout to grayling, softmouth and lat.

With such a rich complex of rivers, Banja Luka draws back angling enthusiasts year after year, especially fly-fishers. Fly-fishing entails multiple casts of an artificial insect or 'fly' using a nearly weightless fishing line. It's a practice that requires significant deliberation and skill and has consequently often been dubbed 'the contemplative man's recreation.'

Fly-fishing tours led by Zepter Passport are strictly catch-and-release only. Barbless hooks are mandatory, making their removal easy after a trophy photo is taken so that the fish can be released back, unharmed, into the water.

For non-anglers and anyone else taking a break from the rivers, the surrounding landscape offers a great mix of activities. Traverse the Kozara mountain system and look out over the entire western half of Bosnia; raft down the Vrbas River, one of Europe's best and the site of the World Rafting Championship in 2009; or, for a piece of Banja Luka's cultural history, explore the country's rich ethnic and religious history by foot and visit the numerous monasteries dotting the countryside.

Banja Luka's weather draws visitors year round to the city and the region's main draw – the vast, wild countryside of Bosnia-Herzegovina. In support of this, a wide variety of Banja Luka hotels is available, both in and outside the city, from budget to luxurious.

Though the term 'getting away from it all' has been overused, Banja Luka, while hardly remote, is admirable in its ability to live up to its promises. For example, any map of Banja Luka reveals a sense of a city so isolated yet so close to Europe's hotspots that it is serviced by most European airports. Fortunately, the few local travel companies operating in Banja Luke have made sincere efforts to protect the natural beauty.

www.banja-luka-hotels.com is the latest Bosnia-Herzegovina destination to join the whl.travel network, following Medjugorje and Sarajevo.

How to Travel Safely

travel
by Kasaa
How to Travel Safely

No matter where you go or where your trip takes you there is and always will be a need for safety tips and rules. So to travel safely while on your city break you should use some if not all of the following tips:

Know Your Area

It doesn't matter if you are in Rome or Greece you need to have a good idea of the town's layout and important features. Some of the important places to know are where you are staying, where the local hospital is, where the police are located and at least one apothecary. Now this may seem hard, but if you have a map and mark them on it then find the center most location you have a start. Once you know what the center of town is find something unique or that will stand out, even a local business will work. Now that you know spot you chose and its local name you will be able to start back there time and time again, and by knowing which important item is in which direction you can get help when needed.

]]>
Keep Your Valuables Locked Up

Do not carry everything with you when you travel and what you do carry ensure it. Once you get to your destination many of the local banks and hotels have safety boxes you can rent and store your personal valuables in. You can also keep most of your belongings in your room as well, only place items that cannot be replaced in the safes.

Dress Accordingly

While you are out and about notice how others are dressed and try for the same casual look. Not only will you be able to blend in more and make targeting tourist harder but also you can experience the local country so much more.

Medical Needs

Keep all medicines with you at all times with extra locked away safely, have a list of instructions incase something does happen and make sure to have a list of phone numbers as well. By caring medicine in its prescribed bottle with you, if something happens the local doctor will already know some about you and how to treat you. Also having at the hotel helps to ensure you have a supply if you need it. When preparing for your trip you need to tell your doctor where you are going and for how long also that you want two bottles for your medicines one to carry and one to store.

Being safe and keeping safe while traveling in different countries is no different that when you are traveling to another state. By being prepared and paying attention to what is around you, you will find yourself having a better and healthier time abroad.

directline-citybreaks.co.uk offers city break packages to all the top cities across Europe. Combine quality hotels with low cost hotel options.

Safe Travel in Mexico

Safe Travel in Mexico

When talking to people about going to Tijuana for dental work, more and more the question arises, "Is it really safe to go to Mexico?" My answer is always YES! I feel quite at home in Tijuana, but like anywhere, you have to use common sense while traveling in Mexico.

I can understand the apprehension that some people have as they contemplate going into another country, where everything is strange and unknown. Then when you hear bad things on the news, it can make it even more frightening. While the decision of whether or not to cross South of the border into Tijuana is the responsibility of each individual, I would like to answer a few questions to try to put things into perspective, as well as give a few tips on how to travel more safely in Mexico, or any foreign country, or even into any Metropolitan down town area of the USA.

Click here to see a youtube testimony about safety in Tijuana

To answer the question, "Is it dangerous in Mexico?" Not if you use common sense! The folks at Sam Dental Tijuana were very helpful to me. Here is what I have learned from them, and after several trips, I can say that yes, I feel safe!

Don't be fearful when you hear negative reports on the news. Keep in perspective that the news agencies look for any incident that will grab headlines. The problem is that news reports often give an exaggerated view and can distort reality. Not to dismiss out of hand the reports one hears, because we always need to be careful and vigilant, but the truth is there are a lot of incidents that happen everyday in certain parts of every large US city that never gets reported because they are so common. Everyday in San Diego and Los Angeles, or New York, or Miami, or Denver, or Dallas, or in Washington D.C., it is common for someone to get mugged or robbed, or found dumped in an alley, so common that it doesn't grab the attention of the news hounds anymore. So what I am trying to say is that yes, you need to be careful while traveling in Mexico, or Tijuana, but also you need to be careful walking in downtown L.A., or San Diego. Don't let rumors or news reports, that are attempting to grab headlines by focusing attention on bad things, exaggerate the dangers and frighten you. Just be cautious, and you'll be alright. Remember, literally 100's of thousands of people cross over into Tijuana from the USA every month without incident.

]]>

I have traveled into Mexico dozens and dozens of times. I have been very often to Tijuana, Juarez, Reynosa, and other border towns. I have also been in many Latin American countries, and have lived for several years in South America. I have NEVER had an incident where I felt in danger. However, I used to live in Denver working for the cable company, and have been threatened with bodily injury and have felt very intimidated on several occasions. I even had to call the police in order to complete my work in someone's back yard because they had threatened to shoot me when I went to shut their cable off!! I feel safer in Mexico, than in certain areas of Denver. And what is Denver compared to L.A.? Or Washington D.C., or Miami?

Tips for Safe Travel.

1. Be discrete. Never flash a lot of money. Keep the majority of your cash hidden in a front pocket that you can zip or button down. Just keep a limited amount of cash in your wallet. Also keep your passport, drivers license, and credit card hidden in another front pocket. It would be good to keep those documents together with a rubber band or a money clip. Also, don't bring all your credit cards with you, just bring one or two, that way if you loose it, you will know which one to report lost.

2. Walk over and take a Taxi rather than drive over. Unless you are planning to stay for several days, and would like to site see, it takes a lot of stress off to not to have to keep an eye on your car, or to have to maneuver in Mexico traffic. I always hate been stuck in the long line to cross back into the USA. It is liberating to just leave the car parked in the USA and let a taxi take you to your dental appointment. If you do drive over, NEVER leave valuables, like your camera or purse, in plain site in the car seat. If you do, you might be inviting a break in. That is not just true in Mexico! Also, if you drive in, make sure you keep your vehicle locked, and ALWAYS put a manual locking device, like the "Club", on your steering wheel. At Sam Dental in Tijuana, they have off street parking that is secure, but it is still a good idea to use a locking device.

3. Keep your night life to a minimum If you are concerned about safety, remember that not only in Tijuana, but in L.A. as well, most crimes are committed late at night. Common sense is a must!

I enjoy traveling in Mexico, and I love the atmosphere and culture. Aside from the tremendous savings I have experienced getting dental and medical procedures done, I have love it in Mexico, and I plan on retiring there in a few years. I feel that it is safe to go to Tijuana. But, the truth is, just like in any large metropolis in the USA, it pays to be cautious and vigilant. You will have a good experience, just like the 10's of thousands of people who cross the border every day without incident. Don't be fearful, just keep your eyes open, and you'll be fine.

Vaccinations for Travel

Vaccinations for Travel

It is an amazing experience to travel overseas to see many beautiful and unique sights of another country and absorb its culture, but one thing you don't want any part of are the diseases such as yellow fever and malaria that many countries are plagued with. Travel vaccinations will take care of this problem, but you must be sure to get the right travel vaccinations for the country you are visiting.

Information about vaccinations for travel can be found on many websites or your travel doctor will be able to advise you on what vaccinations for travel you will need. Malaria prevention can only be successful with the correct vaccinations done at the right time to gain maximum protection during your trip. Since malaria stays in the body and you can get it over and over once you contract the disease, you really don't want to take the risk of getting it the first time.

Many countries do not have the same protection such as flyscreens in their accommodation that are enjoyed in Australia. Therefore it is most likely that you will get bitten by mosquitoes carrying the malaria disease, even if you take other precautions such as wearing long-sleeved shirts and spraying with insect repellent. The malaria mosquitoes are rather more aggressive than other kinds of mozzies, so will often bite through clothing and repellent.

Yellow Fever vaccination will give you peace of mind that you will not contract that debilitating disease and have your holiday spoiled by illness. The trouble is with such diseases that you can often bring it back with you and infect others, not to mention suffering from it yourself.

Good health care may not be available in the very countries where you are most likely to get the disease, so you do not want to take the risk. Some vaccinations need to be done several weeks before you leave for them to have the greatest effect, so don't leave it too late.

Travel to Oman for an Exotic Vacation

Travel to Oman for an Exotic Vacation

Saint Augustine said, "The world is a book, and those who do not travel read only a page". Travel has not only become a recreational activity but also a means of expanding one's dimensions in the world. Meeting new people, exploring unsullied places, trying different cuisines, and understanding novel cultures is not only an experience, but also fun. Oman is one such destination that is fast becoming a favorite on the travel map.

Housing "Arabia's Jewel", the capital city of Muscat, Oman is a blend of the long forgotten and the yet-to-be-discovered character that every travel must embody. Muscat is an awesome mixture of old and new. It boasts of all modern amenities and yet preserves an ancient charm.

The additional attractions in Oman are Sur, a coastal town that has retained the more traditional lifestyle. Nizwa is a city famous for its handicrafts, and Oman's ancient monument, the Nizwa Fort. Salalah, known for its beaches, which are ideal for scuba diving, diving, jet skiing, sailing, and canoeing. Musandam peninsula is known for its striking mountains with unusual textures and patterns.

]]>

One can book a dhow and visit Khawr Ash Shamm from Musandam, to see marine life in placid waters for a breathtaking experience. Masirah Island is a stark rocky landscape rimmed with secluded beaches and loggerhead turtles that come to nest there. This island also has a variety of shellfish and other marine life.

Apart from these exclusive places to see one may enjoy other activities such as photography, filming, rock climbing, scuba diving, ice skating, trekking, camel racing, game fishing, sailing, and horseback riding. From mountains to desert to seascapes, Oman is thriving in multiplicity and thus offers something special for every traveler.

Oman is predominantly an Islamic country, but because of its liberal outlook it not only has highly structured mosques, but also beautiful churches and strikingly detailed temples. Arabic is the official language, though English, Hindi, Urdu, and Swahili are widely spoken, so a tourist can easily manage without knowing how to speak Arabic. However, knowing the local language definitely has its advantages,

As a country, Oman is rich in history, culture, and picturesque locations. From great prophets to adventurers like Sinbad the sailor have called Oman home. This grand country proffers miles of untouched sandy beaches, fresh water oases, unexplored caves, grand forts, sparkling springs, date palms, stunning palaces, mystical souks, twilight cruises and more. Sustainable Local Travel in Cappadocia, Turkey

Sustainable Local Travel in Cappadocia, Turkey

The rich history and magical lunar landscape of Cappadocia, Turkey can be experienced today in a unique type of accommodation: the cave hotel. Built straight into the rock or the facades of old manmade caves, cave hotels are no dark dungeons or cold, musty homes. Instead, Cappadocia's got everything from 5-star caverns to brightly lit grottos for tourists on a budget. They're positively primeval! And they're just one part of an overall approach to travel that emphasizes what's local and sustainable.

The first cave hotel opened its doors in 1990 in the Cappadocian town of Ürgüp. Beginning an abandoned 5th-century cave that had all but collapsed, the owner began by gathering stones and rock hewn from the interior of the cave as sustainable building materials and hired workers from the town in order to keep the restoration local. Upon opening its doors, the Esbelli Evi Cave Boutique Hotel was an immediate success.

There are now more than 400 cave hotels in Cappadocia ranging from family-run grottos to lavish 50-room underground resorts. The cave-hotel industry in Cappadocia has become a unique selling point in this region of Turkey.

]]>

The otherworldly experience of staying in the 5th- and 6th-century caves of Cappadocia is matched only by the unusual natural landscape. Dotted with 'fairy chimneys', the moonlike surroundings have inspired artists, travelers, philosophers and historians since as far back as the days of Herodotus. For a bird's-eye view of the extraordinary geography, hot-air balloon trips are a truly special experience.

Even more impressive than Cappadocia's show-stopping scenery, well-preserved churches and caves and mouthwatering Mediterranean cuisine is the region's commitment is to preserving all of this.  Responsible travel operators Zafer Yazici and Fuyo Ichikawa of Lirita Tours, the whl.travel local connection in Cappadocia, have worked locally for seven years to preserve a traditional way of life in ancient Cappadocia, one of the most sustainable tourist destinations in Turkey.

"There are of course sightseeing spots you cannot miss," explains Yazici, "but local tours are really run in a local way. Selected restaurants are more like family restaurants and typical Cappadocian handcrafts artisans, like carpet weavers, stone carvers or potters, are visited on these tours."

"The biggest advantage of visiting Cappadocia is that it is not a mass-tourism destination," Zafer adds. "We have to keep it this way."

whl.travel is a wholly owned business unit of the WHL Group, the largest local-travel company in the world. Originally started in 2002 as a pilot project of the IFC (part of the World Bank Group), it was spun off as a private company in 2006 and has since grown into a global franchise network of award-winning companies that help travellers find unique ways to experience a destination through local tourism professionals present in more than 100 countries. WHL Group companies empower local partners who have practice in experiential and mindful travel and a local's knack for identifying, explaining and sustaining the distinctive qualities of a place.

How to Get Paid for Your Travel Videos

How to Get Paid for Your Travel Videos

Have you ever wondered how to get paid for traveling? What if I could tell you that by documenting your travels on film, you could get paid for it? It's not as hard as you may imagine… so let's get started.

Most people would imagine selling their videos to The Travel Channel or to The Discovery Channel, that is not the method you're going to take. Those are sometimes well-paid jobs, but they don't meet our criteria of getting paid quickly and allowing us to travel wherever we desire.

So how do you use travel videos to get paid? The answer is simple: By using your videos to drive traffic to third party websites who give you money for doing so.

Here is how it's done:

Unless you've lived in a cave, you have probably heard of YouTube (actually, even people in caves have heard of it). It is not uncommon for basic, elementary videos to get 10's and 100's of thousands of views. Even videos with millions of views are becoming more common by the day. So how do you drive traffic to a third party site with these videos?

]]>
When you post a video to YouTube, you are allowed to make a description of your video. To drive traffic, put a hyperlink in the description to your affiliate link of your third party site. Simply format the address you want to send people to with 'http://YourAffiliateLink.com' and it will become a live link within YouTube's description.

So where do you send people to? There are thousands of affiliate programs out there, but the easiest way to get started is to search Clickbank for products that are related to your video. For example, if you recently went to an Italian Vineyard, you could direct people to a product that teaches "wine tasting" or "how to create your own wine."

You will make a commission on each sale that is made. So, if 10,000 people watch your video over the next year, and 10% of them click your link, you send 1,000 visitors to the site. If 10% of those visitors buy, you make 100 sales. Oftentimes that's at - dollars per sale, so based on this model, you can make 00 to 00 dollars for that video!

You are probably getting excited now. That's for only ONE video! If you have 10 videos out there, you're now making ,000 to ,000 dollars per year just for having some silly videos on the web.

To be entirely realistic, it can be difficult to get that many views for that many videos... but it's NOT impossible. Many people are doing it, so there's no reason you can't do it as well. You just need to know what you're doing!

Here are some last minute keys: First, make videos people are going to share with their friends. They should be instructional, funny, or amazing. Second, consider putting your link ON the video itself. That way, people type the address into their browser if they like your video, and if people embed your video, you'll still drive traffic. Third, find GOOD affiliate programs that 'convert' well… meaning they sell a lot of their stuff.

Using this model, and with a little more training, you'll be off to the races, traveling the world while you make money for filming your adventures!

Traveling in business class flights is no more a luxury enjoyed by the business travelers. The convenience and comfort in cheap business class airlines have made more and more people opting for it. Generally the services in executive class flights would differ in each airline. The large carriers offer more luxurious services to the passengers compared to the small carriers. This is because in large carriers, the executive class would be competing with the first class for providing more luxury and comfort. People are willing to pay for such luxury thereby accomplishing the target of the carriers.

Sometimes if the flight is not fully booked, the airlines would allow passengers to upgrade the position from economy to business class seats. Generally in executive class, basic amenities like tooth paste, mouth wash, travel kit etc would be given to the passengers. It would be better if you could manage to get a seat in front of the plane. This would help you to be the last one on and first one to come out. It is better to take advantage of pre-boarding too.

]]>
It is a known fact that if the basics or the fundamentals of flying are not clear then it could gravely affect the performance of a pilot in the later stages of pilot training. As a commercial airline pilot the individual has the added responsibility of other passengers who are on board and thus it is vital to possess quality education on aviation. Usually the start-up CPL course lasts a few months and in this period a lot of emphasis is laid on theory and flight instructors take added measures in detailing all the elements of aviation. For students aspiring to be pilot the start-up CPL course is a significant step and introduces them to the incredible world of aviation.

If proper research is done then you will find a number of ways to avail cheap air tickets. Travel industry is facing a tough competition and you can take advantage of this. Many travel sites offer cheap air ticket and discount deals. Sometimes you may even get the last minute offers to avail cheap air tickets. You have to be very sharp to find out the fluctuating prices. You have to find out when and who provide these cheap tickets.

Most airport lounges are owned by the different airlines. They will offer you a variety of business services such as phone, fax, and Internet access among others. They will also offer you certain refreshments and a much quieter atmosphere than that noisy and crowded airport terminal.

Passengers who want to avoid the airport chaos can benefit from these airport lounges for a few pounds. Airport lounges offer a haven from noisy children and provide you with privacy so that you can complete your official work or simply read a book with a snack and a drink!

Travel Tips and Hints - Babysitting Options Overseas

Travel Tips and Hints - Babysitting Options Overseas

What Hints Do You Have To Make It Easier For Me To Travel With Elderly People?

What should we do to make sure that both the oldies and the rest of us will all enjoy our vacation

Notify Airlines Early. We recommend that you notify airlines in advance there are elderly people in the traveling party. Also use this opportunity to request any special additional support such as transport to the gate, wheelchairs, etc. You can generally take walking frames, etc up to the gate -ask if this is possible with the airline with whom you've booked

Aisle Seats. Where possible book an aisle seat for elderly passengers. This offers easier access to and from the seat. And also makes it simpler if the person needs to leave the seat regularly, particularly on longer flights. It's also a good idea to plan for stopovers if possible

Special Dietary Needs. Notify the airline or tour company in advance of any special dietary needs. Most companies will do their best to accommodate such requests

Accommodation Needs

.When booking accommodation, you'll need to determine whether there are lifts/elevators available for guests. If not, then see if it's possible to book ground level accommodation. If there are special needs, such as wheelchairs, then make sure that the hotel is fully aware of this need before arrival

]]>

Pre-Booking Strenuous Activities. We advise against pre-booking any activities that are too strenuous and that will involve the elderlytraveler. This offers a level of protection just in case the traveler doesn't handle any long haul sectors too well. It may be that the recovery time may be longer than for a younger person. You can then book your activity once everything is back to normal.

Taking the High Road from Cusco to La Paz: Bus Travel in South America

Taking the High Road from Cusco to La Paz: Bus Travel in South America

I leaned in, weighing the advice coming from a local tour operator in Cusco, Peru. We were in a tourist information office and he was helping me plan the next leg of my trip to La Paz, Bolivia.

"I suggest you take an airplane," he said.

Maybe his advice was because I was a woman travelling alone. Maybe it was because that bus route had been plagued by protesters and blockades in Puno, Peru, for the past month and bus companies were cancelling trips on that road or rerouting them in order to avoid the blockades, adding four more hours to what was normally an eight- to 10-hour long route. Maybe it was because overland border crossings tend to be a little rougher than the customs lines at airports. Or perhaps it was simply because I was in a tourist information office and tourists tend to seek the path of least resistance.

I considered my options: a 14-hour overnight bus ride or a one-hour flight. "I think I'll hope that the blockades clear up and take the bus," I said.

I made my decision for a combination of reasons. I bought my bus ticket from Cusco to La Paz in part because there was no online booking system for the one Bolivian airline offering flights. I also made my decision because, with La Paz around 12,000 feet above sea level – 1,000 feet higher than Cusco – I figured the bus trip would be better way to adjust to the difference. I made my choice because there was a price difference of about and also because I had been thinking a lot about airplane travel: its heavy carbon emissions and its insulation from the local experience of place and journey in which I believe.

The Long, Local Ride

That night at 10pm, I boarded the first of three buses for a trip that actually lasted over 20 hours. During the first stretch from Cusco to Puno, I got out my blackout eye mask and my travel pillow. Cold, I pulled out my travel towel and used that as a blanket. I was caught in a half-sleep delirium that lasted all the way to Puno, our first stop, at 5am, when we were all unloaded and instructed to wait at the terminal for an hour and a half for a different bus that would take us to the border.

]]>

A 90-minute layover at a bus terminal in Peru at 5am? My ticket hadn't said anything about that. Crankily, I made my way to the upstairs cafe and ordered a chamomile tea. I sat at a table with the woman who had been sitting next to me on the bus and we huddled by a little space heater. She was Peruvian, but had emigrated to Spain several years ago and now she was home on vacation to see her family and to take care of some paperwork. We shared experiences and pondered immigration laws. As we parted ways on different buses, she called out in Spanish, "The time passed so quickly. Take care!"

My second bus took me to the border. At customs, we were all unloaded again and shuffled through the first line for an exit stamp from Peru. We walked under a brick arch that was the border and on to Bolivian Immigration, the office I had been dreading for months. In retaliation against the U.S. and its difficult visa policy toward Bolivians, Bolivia requires a number of documents and a large fee from Americans seeking tourist visas. I had assembled my passport, my letter of invitation, my yellow fever vaccination card, two passport-sized photos, a bank statement, my itinerary as proof of onward travel and the cash payment.

When I presented the folder to the official, he leered at me. "Nice photo," he said. "Can I have one to keep?" I blinked, sleep-deprived and dazed. "Is all the paperwork okay?" I asked. He hardly glanced at all the requisite documents that I had collated so carefully. He took the dollar bills and examined them closely. "This one has a tear in it. So does this one. We can't accept these. The bank will not take them from us." Five out of six of my bills were unacceptable. Meanwhile, the bus driver was glaring at me for delaying the bus. Frantic, I rifled through my emergency cash reserves and found just enough bills that were acceptably new.

I made my way back to the bus and collapsed into the seat for a six-kilometres sprint into the nearby town of Copacabana, Bolivia. We stopped, unloaded everything again and waited for a different, smaller bus that would take us to La Paz. That left me with just 20 minutes to scramble down the main road in search of a food stand. I returned to the bus stop just in time to reload my luggage and take my seat.

The Final Stretch to La Paz

On the bus, a Japanese woman (also travelling solo) and I shared a package of cookies and watched out the window as the blue landscapes of Lake Titicaca rolled by. Unfortunately just as I was finally feeling fed, warm and comfortable enough to try to nap, the bus stopped again and we were asked to unload.

What was it this time? We had reached the Strait of Tiquina. Here, I realised why we had had to change to a smaller bus back in Copacabana. Buses are transported across the stretch of lake on barges, while the passengers a ferried in lancha motor boats.

At around 6pm, I was finally in a taxi in La Paz on the way to my friend Raul's house, where I would be visiting for a few days. His mom opened the door and I staggered in with my luggage, dizzy from the journey and the altitude. "You look like you have the hangover of a lifetime," she laughed. "Drop everything and sit down. I'll make you some mate de coca."

Raul joined us at the kitchen table and I relayed anecdotes from the 20-hour bus marathon I had just completed. "Do you wish you had taken a plane instead of the bus?" his mother asked. I paused, undecided. Then Raul spoke up: "I think you've had a more Bolivian experience taking the bus. Bus travel in South America – long bus rides – is a part of life for people in South America. The bus trip you've just made is standard for us. Some are much longer."

Now, looking back, the answer is a definitive: No, I don't wish I had taken a plane from Cusco to La Paz. The 20-hour bus-bus-bus-boat-bus-taxi ride was a rite of passage into the local experience of South American life. And the savings meant I could buy more local alpaca goods here in Bolivia!

Tango Travel

Tango Travel

Your tango travel is just the starting point of a passion that can last all your life, so, if you really want to go on practicing the tango and master the movements, it is fundamental that you inspire good dancers to ask you to dance. Even if you are not a good dancer, expert dancers will be asking you to the dance floor if you can communicate the correct message.

Every tango travel is a perfect venture to grasp some of the "leads" to prompt passion, since you will be seeing professionals and directed by instructors to use these.

It is indispensable that you learn to follow gracefully from one movement to the next, from form to form. It is a delight to dance with whom permits and likes to be led.

Be flirtatious. Even if you are not a proficient dancer, yet you are playful, good dancers will lead you to the dance floor. Tango has everything to do with laughs and coquetry also; a gorgeous smile and personality denote lots of energy.

A thing you will recognize during your tango travel, is the necessity to permanently improve your abilities. It is pleasing when you surprise other performers with better steps.

]]>
In tango, it is essential that you show your physical attributes to attract adept partners. Inspire the imagination and passion while dancing and you will dance the night away.

Seek friendship with the good dancers. The tango is a social activity, it is required that you talk to the dancers if you wish to dance all night. Think of stimulating themes to laugh about and feel at ease.

An aspect of the character of the tango is being audacious. On your tango travel, you will watch women and men asking others to the dance floor. Hence, ask! If your attitude is receptive, fun and one of control, you will unquestionably dance a lot.

As you will validate on your tango travel, passionate tango performers dance until sunrise. Come late and leave last and you will have the best executioners at your feet.

Even good performers were unskilled at one point. If you identify a novice with possibilities and make friends with them, they will positively recall you when they are on top and will permanently seek you to dance, since you helped them when they were insecure and novices to tango. Likewise, skilled executers are exceptional at welcoming beginners by inviting them to the dance floor a lot. It is their way of giving back to everyone who helped them when they tripped and even bruised their partners.

You will sense it on your ; performers feel more stimulated once they met you after having class jointly. During class, you express your desires and sensitivity, and they see what kind of follower you are.

The most crucial truth to grasp to be invited to dance on your tango travel is that proficient dancers are are aroused by tango, so, demonstrate your unique version of this love, be yourself and savor the experience of your life.

Mekong Travel, Mekong Delta Travel, Vietnam Mekong Travel

travel
by Kasaa
Mekong Travel, Mekong Delta Travel, Vietnam Mekong Travel

The people of south Vietnam are often very proud of the richness and vastness of this land. When referring to the rice fields in this area, they often say, "co bay thang canh", meaning the land is so large that the cranes can stretch their wings as they fly. Today, the region is one of Vietnam's highest producer of rice crops, vegetables and fruits.

Life On The Mekong

The Mekong Delta was an ancient Khmer territory. The area was mostly marshland and forest. When the Nguyen Lords took control of this region, a series of canals were built and a system of transportation was implemented in the maze of water ways in the area.
The Mekong Delta is divided into 9 provinces: Long An, Tien Giang, Ben Tre, Dong Thap, An Giang, Vinh Long, Kien Giang, Hau Giang and Minh Hai. The people in this region are made up of Vietnamese and some people of Khmer, Chinese and Cham origin. This accounts for the variety of religions that add to the cultural diversity of this area. Among the religions practiced here are: Buddhism, Catholicism, Cao Dai ( Cao Dai temple - Cu Chi tunnel tour ), Hoa Hao and Islam.
The southwest region of Vietnam is known for the vast rice fields and the huge plantations that make up the core of this region's economy. The region is also known for the many miles of waterways criss-crossing the land making this area both fertile and unique.

Fruit Orchards

The majority of Vietnam's fruits come from the many orchards of the Mekong Delta. On any given season, one can find a variety of tropical fruits that are produced by farmers of this region in the markets of Saigon, Hue, and Ha Noi.
For many tropical fruits, the season is very short because they cannot be picked green and they don't last long in storage where they quickly loose their aroma. The greatest variety of fruits is available during the raining season, from June to September in the South.
After they are picked, the fruits are transported on small boats to floating markets where they are sold to wholesale dealers. In the off-season, many orchards become flower nurseries to meet the peak demand for flowers during the new year celebration in the big cities.
The orchards are divided by a myriad of small irrigation canals with delicate bamboo bridges called "Cau Khi" or monkey bridges crossing them.

]]>

Life On The River

The people living in the Mekong Delta make their living as farmers and fishermen. Often, they live right on the edge of the rivers or canals on various structures built from whatever materials found. Consequently, the architecture along the delta varies from place to place.
Often, many homes have fisheries right under them. Enterprising individuals build a cage like structure of bamboo beneath their homes on these waterways to house fishes. As the fishes grew, they sell the whole batch to processors from the city and start with new ones.
Life in the delta is tightly woven with its rivers as daily activities and businesses are conducted on its banks. Markets, stores, ship yards, repair shops are some of the more popular trades.

Floating Markets

Floating markets are held every morning from 5:00 to about 11:00. Phung Hiep market is the biggest since it is located at the intersection of 7 major canals. It is also a photographer's delight because it can be seen above from a bridge. Cai Rang and Phong Dien are two other notable floating markets in the delta.
Boats loaded with produce from nearby orchards of the Mekong Delta converge to the floating market. They carry mostly fruits but also coconuts, vegetables and fishes.
Buyers are local traders with bigger boats snapping everything by the bushels and resell at local markets or to wholesale dealers from big cities, often for a handsome profit.
Large floating markets are not complete without its floating restaurants, floating gas stations and an occasional tour boat filled with tourists.

Snake Industry

Another unique industry in this region is the snake farm in the area of My Tho township. In 1977, Lt. Colonel Tran Van Duoc (Tu Duoc), a reptile enthusiast, created Dong Nam Snake Farm. Initially created strictly as a research site for medicinal uses of reptile venom, Dong Nam Snake Farm today is the largest of its kind in Vietnam. The farm boasts 20 different varieties of venomous snakes and is home to other species such as boas, turtles.
Cobras are often soaked along with herbs in large flasks of whisky which can be bought in the snake market in Phung Hiep. This potent drink reportedly will increase your libido as well as cure all sorts of illnesses. Live snakes are also for sale in the market and are exported to other Asian countries to be used as food and medicine.

In a typical snake full-course meal, the gallbladder is extracted from the freshly-killed snake and together with some blood and whisky a drink is made. The snake is then chopped off and cooked in various ways. Most tourists opt for a curry stir-fried snake dish just for the thrill of it. General comments are "too much bone and no taste!". More adventurous travelers have reported severe stomach cramps after swallowing down the snake drink.

You've got to eat while traveling and most tourists will tell you that the best part of the whole trip is experiencing the food while in foreign places. If you are a fussy eater or have special dietary needs, you can still be accommodated while traveling, just plan ahead.

What better way to immerse yourself in the local culture than by visiting the local markets. Not only will you get to see and try the local cuisine, but you'll probably save a lot of money. Eating in restaurants, especially those geared towards the tourist trade, can get very expensive. Try buying your food fresh from the markets and preparing it yourself. Or buy already prepared food from the market vendor.

In Bangkok you can visit the floating markets and buy anything from fresh fruit and vegetables, to ready prepared noodle soup. In Jerusalem the outdoor market or 'shuk' not only sells fruits and vegetables, but meat, poultry, fish, bread, nuts, cheese, spices and so on. As in most markets, you have to bargain at a shuk to get a good deal as prices vary markedly. African markets sell souvenirs as well as food.

Bargaining is welcomed at most markets, especially for keepsakes. Knowing how to bargain will save any traveler money. Here are a few points to follow when attempting to bargain for an item:

]]>

1. Always be polite and enjoy the experience

2. Ask for the price and then halve it. Start your bargaining at that number.

3. If the price is too high, walk away. You'll be surprised how quickly the price comes down when you are disinterested!

4. Work out how much you are paying for in your own currency. Don't haggle over a couple of cents. Remember this is how the market vendors make a living.

5. Don't pay more than your think the item is worth.

6. You can also barter in some places. Brand name items (jeans, hats, shoes) are sought after items in some countries so barter with what you can afford to part with.

Other tips for saving money on a daily basis include:

* Avoid tourist-type restaurants. Find out where the locals eat and you'll usually find authentic (better) cuisine at a lower price.

* Take note of what the farmers in the area eat. It'll be cheap and healthy.

* Always pack snacks and fruit when going on a day trip. You'll save money when you don't have to buy from the tourist stops and street vendors along the way.

* Pack a picnic and go exploring. Use produce from the local market. You'll save a bundle and eat well.

* Shop where the locals shop, not where the tourists go.

* Book into hotels that have breakfast as part of the package.

* Avoid airport food as it is usually expensive and not particularly healthy.

* Always ask if there are any discount offers available. If you don't ask you won't know and you won't save.

* Walk when you can. It's cheaper and a good healthy alternative, as well as giving you the opportunity to immerse yourself in the culture of the country you are in.

* Avoid Laundromats. Wash your own clothes in the bathroom sink if you are able.

* Look for free entertainment.

Free Entertainment Ideas for Travelers

Free Entertainment Ideas for Travelers

There are loads of fantastic ways to get free entertainment when traveling. All you need is a bit of research before you go and to think a bit laterally. Whether you get your entertainment from music, theatre, lectures, walks or museums there are free experiences all over the globe. Here are some ideas to consider when traveling at home or abroad:

1. Go for a hike or a bushwalk. Remember to pack enough food and drink and sunscreen. Enjoy the country's scenery for free.

2. Gallery openings are a way to see local art and you might even get free wine and food thrown in!

3. Art walks and garden tours are where you visit local art galleries or homes with gardens for show. You get to meet locals and find out about the local art and garden scene.

4. Free nights at museums. Some museums are even open free all the time (for example The British Museum).

5. Visit the local churches. There is so much history and local culture to be experienced in places of worship and you'll find a large majority of these have no entry fee, although some may ask for a donation.

6. Open mic nights at pubs where new musicians perform for free to an audience willing to listen. You never know which up-coming star you'll get to hear.

7. Volunteer to be an usher at a concert, play or movie. Volunteer to help out at a conference or show. You'll get to experience what's on offer for no admission cost.

8. Visit the local library. Apart from getting to read books for free you get a different cultural experience in every library you visit. Libraries often have author visits and visiting speakers for generally free admission.

9. Find out if there are any free lunch time concerts.

10. Visit the local television station and see if any shows have live audiences for taping. Join in!

11. Go to the beach for the day.

12. Is there a local fair or festival on where you are visiting? If so you will probably find lots of free attractions there as well as paid ones.

13. Visit the local botanical gardens. In most countries these are free to visit and enjoy.

14. Walk around the city with your eyes open taking in all the sights. It's amazing what sort of 'free entertainment' this will bring you!

15. Window shop. Some people can do this for hours! And it doesn't cost you a cent.

16. And don't forget, you can always purchase a local Entertain coupon book which will get you discounts on plenty of activities and entertainments, but can also offer some freebies such as "visit one day, get the second for free" or "pay for one person and the second visits for free"

Enjoy your free entertainment while traveling. There's plenty of it around.
